If you can’t run with the “big” dogs… Stay on the porch!

I had so much fun training my dogs for the Humane Society's Run with the Dogs benefit.
All the furry friend's brought out their owners to do something good for their friends in need. Everyone donated an entry fee to the Humane Society of Saline County. The racers got fun prizes and the Humane Society raised some much needed money.

I know my dogs were proud of me for coming out to help their friends. We all had a lot of fun making new friends and also helping out our community.

I am so proud to report my little ChiChi, hip replacement and all, came in FIRST PLACE for the small breed category! She is a wonderful example of how hard work and determination will get us all to the finish line.

American Heart Association Women’s Show 2010

I was so happy to attend the Arkansas Women’s Show. So many women came out to learn about heart health specifically for women and how important it is to learn your numbers. With the power of education and early detection we can prevent one more woman from falling victim to the number one killer of American women.

There were also a lot of companies that brought products specifically geared for women and
making our lives easier!  The American Heart Association also provided free screenings, so any woman could leave knowing their numbers and take the steps to being as heart healthy as possible.

There were also a few celebrities, Miss. International and somebody else y'all might recognize. Paula Dean!  How cool is that! I wish I could have stayed long enough to meet her. Wonder if she was going to cook a heart healthy meal...HA!

My Baby is a Centerfold

I was just recently awarded the centerfold in SEEK magazine!!! Get your minds out of the gutter. This magazine is Looking Beyond Cancer's Limits and they look deeper into new treatments and possible cures. The latest issue is featuring the Look Good... Feel Better Program that I was able to implement at UAMS this past year. The more locations Look Good...Feel Better is available, more women can be helped.

The article is called More Than Just A Pretty Face and you can click HERE to read the article.

Women are so much more than just a pretty face, especially women with cancer. The women that I have meet through the Look Good...Feel Better Program have been incrediablly inspiring and are unbelievably BEAUTIFUL!

NO women should have to go through cancer treatment, but if you do always remember you are more than Just a Pretty Face and you are always welcome at The Look Good...Feel Better Program.

Relay for Life 2010

These events are so important! Not only because they recognize over 11 million cancer survivors, but they also educate the public about advances being made in cancer research and raise a lot of cash to furthur research and other programs.  Most people think these events are serious and stuffy, but we have a lot of fun!

I haven't got the totals for the entire event, but we had a great time!!! I was even able to raise $15.00 for my Jail Bail! LOL!

During all this fun we had a survivor banquette, which was a amazing and the food was delish!

I was very honored to be the guest speaker, but I suprised myself.  I was up at the microphone spouting out facts and reasons why we should all volunteer at the American Cancer Society and I said something that has changed the way I look at my volunteering.

The American Cancer Society has been around for 97 years! NINETY-SEVEN years! Then I thought about what has changed in 97 years. We have made so many advances in technology that have changed all of our lives, but we have still not found a cure for cancer.  That is so sad, but it makes me want to do more to help!  I am not a doctor or a research scientist, but I can take one woman at a time and make them look like a million bucks! The Look Good... Feel Better Program is so much more than make up and hair, it truely gives women who are fighting for their lives a much needed confidence boost.

See, you don't have to dontate thousands of dollars or have a PhD to make a difference.  I bring my make up brushes and curling irons to the table, what are you going to bring?  Make a difference now, let's not wait another 97 years.

Everyone has a talent that could help get us closer to the cure.

Lesson In Love

Lots of people can tell you life lessons but until you experience them for your self. It can not be put in perspective like you think it will be until it happens. I just had a very big life lesson taught to me this weekend. You dream about and talk about the biggest engagement ring, the fanciest wedding, and all of the stuff that goes along with getting married. Then you get married and wonder what you did all that for. It's funny how you think back about the whole thing.

My husband and I did not do the whole big wedding thing. We went away to a quiet beach in the rain forest. Just him and I. We wanted the day to be just about us. The day. What we were vowing to one another. Changing are lives. Beginning our life as husband and wife. It is a day that we still talk about. A day that after we go to someones wedding we giggle in each others ear that ours was better and that it was just about us. Then on the way home we relive the that day again.

I do not have the biggest engagement ring but it is the biggest best one in the whole world to me. The best fanciest ring but most importantly it is the ring that my husband wanted me to have. The one he worked hard to save for. The one he designed for me. One like no one else's because of the day he placed it on my finger. The amazing moment in time that we said our vows and once again that ring was slipped on my finger.

This weekend my ring was taken from my home. I thought I miss placed it. I looked. I searched. I turned my home upside down. Finally the moment came when I had to tell my husband that my ring was not where it should be. It was hard to face my husband who put so much love in the idea of this ring not to mention the hard work that he had done to get this ring that its now gone. Do you know what he said? Its just a ring. We are still married. I still love you. Of course he immediately began helping me to look for it in case I had miss placed it but I didn't miss place it. It was taken but now with prayer and hard detective work it is back in it's rightful I mean leftful place. You know what I'm still married and I think we are better for it too. Love is not a ring or a thing it is a commitment to one another. My husband has been wonderful through this whole ordeal and we are closer now because of it.

Award!

I was just awarded a pretty big award from the American Cancer Society. They just recognized me for my outstanding contributions to the Look Good... Feel Better Program. So I got dressed up put on my crown and went to the Relay for Life to receive my award. I was so excited! This is what I am thinking finally all my hard work is paying off. They say a long speech about all that I have done and what I will be doing. So I feeling pretty good. Look at me. Look what I have done. I have helped all of these cancer patients. They call out Amberlee Hayman, Mrs. Mississippi will you please come receive your award. I stand up walk to the stage receive my award and take lots of pictures will all the right people with the biggest smile on my face.

I go to my seat and watch for the relay to begin. Then they start calling out special survivors and the team leaders. This is when I realize these people are the ones that should be getting the awards and then a very small very young little girl comes up to me and she had heard what the Look Good... Feel Better Program dose for women with cancer and she wanted to know if I could make her pretty like I was. It was very hard to hold back the tears because in front of me was the most beautiful girl I have ever seen. At eight years old she had been battling cancer for most of her life and had more courage than three grown men and more grace and beauty than any beauty queen I had ever meet.

Just as matter of factually as she had asked me I told her we could get her fixed up. All that being said I have a new out look on life and an even bigger mission than when I started with the American Cancer Society.

The more I work with cancer patients the younger they seam to get. And there is such a thing as a Teen Look Good... Feel Better Program, but there are only seven in the whole United States. Only seven! There are not enough regular Look Good... Feel Better Programs to take care of the women much less seven for all of the young people. Lets make this a time to take care of the next generation until we find a cure for cancer. Making the Look Good... Feel Better program a thing of the past is my goal.

Peace Love and Cancer

I don't really know how to talk about this subject but it has come up in the Look Good... Feel Better Programs I have facilitated and I read a magazine article the other day that had been weighing heavy on my mind.

The women want to know how to get and feel sexy again. The lady in the article wants to know how to be with her husband after her treatment for Brest cancer or if her husband even sees her as a sexual person anymore. The article says for her to try a new hair cut, make up, clothing. All of theses things the Look Good... Feel Better Program helps women with well except the clothing. All of thees things are offered for free because of the Personal Care Products Council Foundation, American Cancer Society, and The Nation Cosmetology Association.

This is why it is so important to camouflage the side effects of cancer. Women still want to be women even through cancer treatment. They need to be women during this time. They need our support, your support, and the love of there husbands and family's during this time.

Heart Walk 2010

So many wonderful people came out on this day to support Heart Health. I was so happy the weather was good and I was able to run the 5K! Miss International Erin Golden and Mrs. Arkansas International Robin More were also able to come and support the Heart Health mission.

Mrs. Arkannsas International Pageant 2010

Today was the first day of the pageant festivities. We had a wonderful orientation and then lunch was provided for us by Western Sizzler of Jacksonville. I almost felt like a celebrity walking in! The staff made us feel so welcome and the other customers were very happy to see all of the contestants.

Then it was on to every one's favorite part the interview. We had five wonderfully talented judges for five min. one on ones. Now that this part is over for the Mrs. contestants the teen and Miss will interview tomorrow.

For the Mrs. Contestants we will be getting up early to walk in the American Heart Association Heart Walk. It will be very fun and lots of information about heart health. I did this last year and had a blast!

Saturday I got to be a part of a a wonderful community involvement project to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Maurice's presented a spring fashion show in partner with local business who provided items for a silent auction. The items were bid on to raise money and every model brought awareness about cancer. The relay for life team leader was their to in form everyone about the relay for life in Benton. It was a wonderful time for everyone involved.

This just show that you can use anything to help out great cause. The American Cancer Society is that great cause. With over a million cases of cancer diagnose every year in the U. S. we have to support this organization.

Living Billboard April 1-5, 2010

Living Billboard is a fund raiser for the American Cancer Society. It brings awareness to the American Cancer Society, the programs they offer, and raises money for there programs and research. One of the programs is The Look Good Feel ... Better Program. It is a wonderful program that helps women battle the physical side effects of cancer. Although the program works to cover the outside in my experience it brings out the beauty on the inside.

I love volunteering with this program and the American Cancer Society so come to the Living Billboard and donate to keep programs like The Look Good... Feel Better available and more research to be done to find a cure for cancer.

I Love My Job!

I just want everyone to know that I have the coolest job! I help women feel as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside! and everyone knows that when you look good you surly feel better. I love being on the cutting edge of my job and always bringing something fresh to the table. Taking something good and making it better. I definitely have a heart to serve even when it is not easy. I am always striving for better. This is what makes what I do for women awesome.

New Stuff

So I have a few things to tell you guys about and I am sorry I can not find my cord to up load the pictures but I will get them up ASAP.

First I would like to tell you I have all of my paper work and applications turned in to compeat in Mrs. Arkansas International Pageant. I am so excited about compeating and takeing my platform The Face of Hope featuring The American Cancer Society's Look Good... Feel Better Program to the next leval.

I turned in my paper work on Sunday and on Monday I facilitated the first Look Good... Feel Better Program for the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute at UAMS in Little Rock, AR. We have many Look Good... Feel Better Programs throughout the state but this one is an important one to me because UAMS is one of the leading cancer facilities in Arkansas and they did not have the Look Good... Feel Better Program. One of the most important things about the program is to have it easily assessable to as many women as possible and implementing this in to UAMS is a big part of getting it to more women.

After facilitating the program I was informed of a very nice and informational magazine article that was written about me and the program. This article will also be added to every new patient packet for cancer patients to let them know about the program, what it dose, and how to get singed up. I super excited about the support I am getting from UAMS. I know this is the start of something good for Arkansas and for the patients that com from other states.

How long is your Love

As you know I have been traveling a bit but I am also remodeling the master bath room with my husband wich is very interesting since he is color blind but what I want to tell you about is a woman that I meet while providing pamper days at Arkansas Children's Hospital through my non- profit organization Handas with a Heart.

This lady came to to recive services from Hands With a Heart because she is the parent care giver of an extended stay patient at Arkansa Children's Hospital. Her three year old son has cancer. What makes her so extrodinary is that while she was coming to get recharged she is still giving. She donated 17 inches of her hair to help other children cancer patients have real human wigs for free.

What an amazing woman, person, and mother. This is the true heart of mother. Always giving and trying to help more people. Looking beyond your own self and giving a little more. I want be more like this woman. I volunteer to help people and change lives but my life is changed. There is good in people and I love to see it.

Hawaii 2010

Right after i got home from Dallas for my continuing education I was able to celebrate a wonderful trip with my husband to Hawaii not only for his accomplishments at work but for our four year wedding anniversary. It was an amazing and insightful trip. You think one way until you experience something for your self. I think I learned as much on this trip as I did at my education. I learned that you don't have to wear make up to dinner with friends, that there is a 20,000.00 orchid, that I love my family more than ever. Spending time with each other talking we bonded even more and that there are cactus in Hawaii.

Live and Learn

Just when you think you are at the top of your game in your profession new technology comes out and you are back at square one. I recently up dated my education for Great Lengths Hair Extensions in Dallas,TX and it was amazing! I am so happy that I went. They always say if you can learn one new thing everyday then your living. Well I must really be living because I learned 100 things each day I was in class. This new technology and products are not only going to make my job easier in the long run but I will be able to help more people with their hair needs.

Labor of Love

This wonderful Valentines Day I spent my day with beautiful women. Which is crazy because I have a very special husband. This day was wonderful because all of these women compete in pageants or support women who compete in pageants. We all came together on this day of love to prepare us for something we all had in common, a love for competing in pageants and making a difference in our communities.

We all assembled to learn about our interview skills from the official pageant coach of the International Pageant System Suzy Bootz Mrs. International 2006. Laine Berry Mrs. International 2008 was there to develop our personal style and Robin More Mrs. Arkansas International 2009 topped it off with a make up lesson to teach each and everyone of us that we are beautiful on the outside too.

Judging

Little Miss Mayflower what else can I say. This was such a good experience. It was very interesting to be sitting on the other side of the of the judges table. Judging is a little harder job than what I previously thought. I was under the impression that the judges just pick the one they want to win, mark that score card and that was all there was to it.

Little Miss Mayflower was just a local little girls pageant and I was having a hard time choosing. Every little girl that was there was deserving of the title and meet the qualifications of living in Mayflower. I felt that if I picked one girl over another the parents standing behind me would assume I didn't think there daughter was up to par but really it was a very hard choice to make between all those sweet little faces. I can't imagine choosing Miss International or something of that caliber. I have a new found respect for the judging panel at my next pageant. You have a lot harder job than I thought and I appreciate you hard job a lot more now. Thanks for all that you do to make women's lives better.

Heart Health Month

February is Heart Health Month and there are so many activities that you can participate in and go to to learn about Heart Health. Not only are these events raising money for the cause but they are teaching the young and old how to take care of there heart. The younger you start your heart care the better of you are. Heart Disease has been thought to be a "mans disease" but it kills more women every year than all types of cancer. It is hard to detect the signs and many women and some doctors brush the symptoms off. Don't let this happen to you or someone you love.

Fun events I have already participated in are a Heart Ball t.v. commercial, National Wear Red Day event at the the State Capitol in Little Rock, AR and this is just in the first week of Heart of Heart Health Month. I will keep you up dated of all the wonderful events to help you with your Heart Health.

Go Red

I compete in the International Pageant System as many of you know. There national platform is Go Red Heart Health for Women and February is is Heart Health month. So I would like everyone to take a minute to think about your heart health. Heart disease is the number one killer of women. More than all cancers combined. So I would like for you to take the time to be aware of the signs of heart disease. They are much harder to detect in women. The American Heart Association web site has so much information for you to learn about heart disease. Take the time to know the signs.

Demo Day

Demo day was actually a construction day. A day of building the the Look Good... Feel Better Program sponsored by the American Cancer Socity into the every day treatment at the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institut in Little Rock Arkansas. When Cancer patients come to the Cancer Institute the know that they will be getting the best medical care. Now they know they will be getting the best all around care. Not only will they be treated for there cancer they will be treated for the side effects of cancer as well.

This is the first time the Cancer Institute has ever offered a program like this on site. I am proud to be a a part of the team that can make this happen. This program sponsored by the American Cancer Society and partnered with the Cancer Institute is a big step in the right direction in the fight against cancer. I cant wait for our first Look Good... Feel Better Program to take place. The main event will happen on February 15, 2010 at 1:30p.m. on the first floor of the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute. If you have cancer or know some one who dose please join us. If you do not live in this area call 1-800-395-LOOK to find one in your area. It will be worth the call.

I am sure most of you watched the benefit on t.v. tonite for Haiti. I know that I could not stop watching. I hope you were in the position to give even if it was just a little bit. Most of us on our worst day could not imagine what these people are going through. We have so many resources in America that most of us take for granted or forget about that these people have probably never even thought about. I hope that you take a moment to be thankful for the services and opportunities we have in America, our family, and the ability we have to help others.

The ability to help others is a very big part of why I think America is so great. Even during our trials and tribulations we are still helping others in need. If everyone did just one small thing it would make a a very big difference. What these people are asking for is small basic needs. Water, something we just go to the faucet for. It is clean and pure and we do not think twice about throwing the last of the glass down the drain. These people have no water, food, or medicine. Not only do they not have these things but are having hard time getting these things at all. There is so much to be done. Please do just one small part to help these people. One day it could be you that just needs that little bit of water.
I have a lot to be thankful for. Today my husband helped me clean out the garage. Wooo hooo. That's a big deal at my house. My husband never wants to clean it out because it always seems be an over whelming task and I feel I can't do it by myself because it can take quite a bit of strength sometimes but we are always so happy in the end that we did it. Sometimes we even find really cool stuff that we forgot we had.

Cleaning out the garage can be like fighting cancer you don't want to do it. You put it off. It's scary and maybe you don't have a husband to help you do the heavy lifting. The American Cancer Society is there for you. They can get you on the right track, answer your fears, and do "a lot of heavy lifting" for you. It is all free any time you need. No waiting around for your husband to get done watching the game. Just get right in there and get the job done.

If you know some one who needs services from the American Cancer Society please encourage them to call. They can do so much to help any time of day. Just call.

Well I was happy to see today that I have a few new followers. How cool is that. It just let's me know that every body wants to hear a story. As a hair stylist I hear alot of story's. If you can think of some of the story you tell your hair stylist.

What I am telling through this blog is my story or journey of listening to women's story's about having cancer and what they go through. Women can do so many things. They are all amazing in what they do. Fighting cancer is one of them.

Look Good... Feel Better sponsored by American Cancer Society is helping these women put there best face forward to the fight of cancer. Women have so many things taken away or changed during there fight against cancer the least we can do is to support a program that gives them back there dignity to look and feel like the beautiful women they are.

I was doing a ladies daughters hair today and the more we talked and told the stories that women tell in the salon. She began to tell me about her fight with breast cancer and how everything affected her during her treatment and reconstruction. One of the things that kept her feeling like herself was the Look Good... Feel Better program. Not only did this program help her feel like her self during the fight but the American Cancer Society constantly let her know she had some one to turn to. Some one to talk to and get advice from. What a great feeling to know there is always someone there for you.

After the day was over I knew that I made the right choice to listen to her story. She thought that I was helping her but really she was helping me. Helping me to understand the face of cancer. Cancer Affects one in three people. Help me change the face of cancer. Hope is Beautiful. Give it to someone today.

So happy the New 2010 year is here. It is time for a fresh start to a new year. One of the things women sometimes do for a Farah start in the new year is get a make over. The Look Good... Feel Better program sponsored by the American Cancer Society dose the same thing for women with cancer all through out the year. When ever women are diagnosed with cancer they can call 1-800-394-LOOK and set up for a FREE make over to help them combat the physical side effects of cancer treatment.

The Look Good... Feel Better program is in all 50 states and most cities and what they do is give women the chance to come to gether and deal with everything that goes on with women having cancer and going through the treatment of cancer. A licenced cosmetologist like myself leads the group in all of the steps of how to clense and take care of your skin and nails, do your make up, make a turbin, and pick out a wig. All of this is FREE! Plus yu get to keep all of the wonderful poducts donated by the care products councel foundation. The American Cancer Society also donates a wig to them as well.

What better way to start off than with a Look Good... Feel Better make over. If you have cancer call 1-800-394-LOOK and get your FREE make over to day. Put your best face forward and change the face of cancer. Hope is Beautiful and I know you are Beautiful too.
So I hope everyone made it through the holidays. I know mine was very busy with family, friends, and food.

It is on for a new year and a fresh start for everyone. My freshest project will be implementing a Look Good... Feel Better program at the UAMS Hospital in Little Rock, AR for the very first time. They are one of the leading cancer institutes in America for cancer patients but until now have never had a Look Good... Feel Better program Sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

The American Cancer Society is a wonderful resource for people with or going through cancer treatment or for a caregiver taking care of someone with or going through cancer treatment. They have so much to offer for free and that can be a big help during these times. Call The American Cancer Society today to see how they can help you fight cancer. Remember Hope is Beautiful and The American Cancer Society gives us that HOPE with support and research.
